Constellations
Walking down a gravel path one day, I noticed a flicker of light though not from above but below. A single blue glass shard against rock had conjured great light within. Glass, rocks, wood, shells and other natural materials collected and recreated to serve as an offering of thanks to the earth. In order to build Constellations, a collection that grows with the harvest, the creative practice becomes spiritual. Along with the glass comes the trash, mostly plastic refuse that will not decompose, though technology has thought of some innovative ways to reuse trash. To cultivate Constellations, a collection that burgeons with each harvest, my creative process has assumed a spiritual dimension.
In "Constellations," I have curated a collection of 75 hand-crafted Modernist sculptures that draw inspiration from nurturing bonds with the land and the environment. The entire ceremonial process of venerating Earth through these artistic creations is meticulously captured in my photography. Beginning from my profound connection with the earth, traversing through the varied manifestations of life within water, glass, rock, and shells, I meticulously design each intricate facet with the purpose of crafting pieces that kindle inspiration, elevate the spirit, and rekindle our ties with the natural world.
My artistic journey finds its roots in the influences of Betye Saar and Noah Purifoy. Purifoy's conceptual assemblage work, "Drum Song," circa 1970, serves as a testament to the "new American artist" confronting the realms of capitalist consumerism, particularly pertinent as a Black artist. This artistic stance is closely intertwined with his personal, political, and public engagement during the Watts Rebellion of 1965. Art historian Mark Godfrey, in his essay "Notes on Abstraction," asserts, "Purifoy interpreted the Watts rebellion not only as a revolt against discrimination, but also as a rejection of materialism."
The practice of assemblage invokes parallels with the subversive repurposing of "precious" items within Indigenous cultures. Take for instance glass, beads, and cowrie shells—objects of significance for Indigenous communities spanning from Hawai'i Island to the Niger Valley—which were plundered by imperial powers and repurposed as "currency" for the slave trade. While the shell may have held little intrinsic worth for the imperialist powers, serving merely as an extraction tool, it symbolized immense communal riches for groups like the Akan in Ghana.
Armed with this insight into the dynamics of market influences, Purifoy embarked on his artistic journey. Godfrey eloquently portrays, "Purifoy embarked on the task of gathering the remains of consumables and transforming them into new, abstract assemblage sculptures." Concluding, "Education through creativity remains the sole path for individuals to unearth their identity within this materialistic world."
In my artistic practice, I find pathways to uphold value systems that deviate from the mainstream. The act of gathering resources from the earth and subsequently returning them holds the power to maintain harmonious relations with all that is inherently beautiful.
